Such a technology opens the opportunity for Latvian companies...

Nanoindentation testing of nanoparticle reinforced PEO coating

Overview of activities The mechanical response of the PEO coatings was investigated in this phase of the research. Nano mechanical characterization of the coatings was performed on a Bruker Hysitron TI 980 Triboindenter. The nanoindenter tip was made of diamond in Berkovich type geometry with half-angle 65.27° and included angle 142.30°. The Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio for the diamond provide by the manufacturer as 1140 GPa and 0.07, respectively. The equipment has active...

Efficient Hydrogen Storage for Fuel Cells

SMW is experimenting with several magnesium hydride compound modifications, comprising potentially optimal solutions for attaining the most effective and easily implementable hydrogen storage by way of selective H2 adsorption facilitated by Mg powder produced by SMW. This process is more economical and efficient because it does not require extraordinarily high temperature levels or high power input for production of MgH2. The process of hydrogen chemisorption is accomplished at 170°C -...

Almascan®

SMW is currently developing Almascan® (Al-Mg-Sc system), deploying advanced powder metallurgy technology which entails ultra-rapid cooling (up to 10.000.000 K/s) through the use of spinning procedure with subsequent thermoplastic processing.  The technology to be implemented allows to obtain materials with desired enhanced characteristics. Expected material characteristics: •       tensile strength σB = 650-675 MPa, yield...

MagForming

Development of new magnesium forming technologies for the aeronautics industry (MagForming and AEROMAG) MagForming  (created to complement the work of the AEROMAG project), was launched as a multi-national consortium to advance the state of the art in the technology of plastic processing of wrought magnesium alloys for aeronautical applications, by developing tools and methodologies for industrial technologies and demonstrating their feasibility in aeronautics. SMWE is the...

AeroMag

Aeronautical Application of Wrought Magnesium (FP6 AEROMAG) The technical focus of the university-driven proposal, AEROMAG, designed in collaboration with the Network of Universities "EASN," is the development of new magnesium wrought products (sheets and extrusions), that provide significantly improved static and fatigue strength properties. Project coordination by: EADS Innovation Works (Germany). Consortium partners: End-users EADS Innovation Works,...

Lightweight Aircraft Seats

Since 2008, international regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), have explored removing the restrictive paragraph in SAE Standard AS8049B which bans the use of magnesium alloys in aircraft seats. Without such a restriction, application of Mg alloys in a seat’s primary structure will make it possible to achieve a substantial weight reduction.  based on our preliminary calculations, replacing Al alloy seat elements with their Mg...

Exploration and Mining in Egypt

Almost 150 million roubles invested in 2007 – 2010 into two concession sites, leading Russi an geologists deployed, dozens of young Egyptian specialists trained. Very conclusive results attained following evaluation of more than 10,000 samples .    We are preparing a feasibility study and a business plan (on $25 million scale) for drilling operations, additional geophysical survey and start of extraction on sites where presence of gold is already discovered...

Al-Li alloys

Aluminium-lithium alloys are a separate class of alloys characterised by valuable combination of properties: lower density higher Young's modulus relatively high mechanical properties corrosion resistance. There are at present about 20 Russian wrought alloy grades. Developed for different purposes, they have different physical, mechanical, corrosive, technological and operational properties. For instance, density of Al-Li...
